The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District, like many districts across Canada, uses the Google for Education Suite as its primary web platform for educational and productivity services. As you are aware, this suite of applications provides access to dozens of tools including Google’s video streaming and uploading service, YouTube. The content on YouTube is user-generated with over 400 minutes of new video uploaded every minute. The application (app) incorporates machine learning tools to filter inappropriate content and also relies on viewers to flag videos that may violate the terms of service. Despite these measures, inappropriate content is still available to users.

As per YouTube’s Terms of Service, the website is not intended for individuals under the age of 13. The app has an option of adjusting settings for each user to restricted mode. In restricted mode, the app “hides videos that may contain inappropriate content flagged by users and other signals. No filter is 100% accurate, but this will help you avoid most inappropriate content.”

The District recognizes the value of the amazing amount of educational information that exists on YouTube. With the guidance and assistance of educational professionals throughout the province, we are empowering students to make responsible choices as digital citizens.

In light of this information, please note YouTube Restricted Mode will be enabled for all K-8 student user accounts as of Monday, March 11, 2019. This will only apply to students in K-8 and restrictions will apply when students are signed into their Google accounts. Signing into Google is a best practice for all student users on any District or school device. A user is automatically signed into their Google account when using a Chromebook or any application in G Suite. As a Result, searching in YouTube will be restricted and students may see the message “Some results have been removed because restricted mode is enabled.” also, The YouTube comments feature will not be available.

As always, we will continue highlighting the importance of digital citizenship and online safety with our students. Thank you for your continued support.

Frank Roberts Junior High will be hosting its annual Scholastic Book Fair from December 3rd - 6th.  All students will have an opportunity to visit the learning resources center to view and purchase books during this time period.  Parents can view/purchase books during the Parent -Teacher interview scheduled for Thursday December 6th.  This is a good opportunity to get some great reading materials for your child and yourself and/or to purchase Christmas gifts.  The books are well priced and there is a great selection available. It is a great opportunity to support Frank Roberts Junior high at the same time.

For the week of Dec.10th-14th, classes 9-7 and 9-8 are holding a ‘Share for Cheer’ Drive.  During this time, students are asked to donate non-perishable food items, toiletries, and gift cards.  The classes have decided that Christmas isn’t always an easy time of year for everyone so we are hoping our Frank Roberts Community can Share The Cheer.  Each class will receive a milk crate that will be collected every morning by the 9-7/9-8 crew. The crew will tally the points that each homeroom brings in every morning and add these to the master points list.  The homeroom that accumulates the most points, at the end of the week, will win a 'surprise reward’. A list of some possible items that people can donate are : Sweet Cookies, Pasta Noodles, Tin Fruit, any Tin Soups or Stews, Toothbrushes, Toothpaste, Sanitary Napkins, Razors, Shampoo, Soap, or Gift cards(Sobeys, Lawtons, Dominion, Pipers, Shopper's, Walmart)
