6th Annual S.O.A.R. Birthday Celebration and Memorial Food Drive - May 9, 2019

May 9th marks a special day for Louise and Bernie Mercer. Alex and Riley, beloved children of Louise and Bernie, shared the same birthday, May 9th. Louise and Bernie want to honor both of their children’s memory on that special day by asking residents and schools in Conception Bay South and Paradise to participate in the 6th Annual S.O.A.R. (Spirit of Alex and Riley) Birthday Celebration and Memorial Food Drive.

In remembrance of Riley and Alex, They invite you to help give back to the community. On Thursday, May 9th, everyone is invited to The Salvation Army Conception Bay South Corps, 331 Conception Bay Highway, between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., to enjoy a cup of tea/coffee and a piece of birthday cake with Louise and Bernie. During the birthday celebrations, they will be gratefully accepting donations of non-perishable food items along with monetary donations for the CBS/Paradise Community Food Bank.

Frank Roberts Junior High will also be participating this year and will be asking all students to donate a non-perishable food item from April 29th - May 9th, if possible to this wonderful cause. For every homeroom class that participates, the class name will be entered in for a chance to win a pizza party. On May 9th, arrangements have been made with the Conception Bay South Fire Department and the Paradise Fire Department to pick up food donations at participating schools. All donations to the Food Bank will be brought to The Salvation Army CBS Corps. It is our hope that once again this year, a huge donation will be made to the CBS/Paradise Community Food Bank in memory of Alex and Riley.

Together we can make a difference in our communities! Thank you in advance for your support!

The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District, like many districts across Canada, uses the Google for Education Suite as its primary web platform for educational and productivity services. As you are aware, this suite of applications provides access to dozens of tools including Google’s video streaming and uploading service, YouTube. The content on YouTube is user-generated with over 400 minutes of new video uploaded every minute. The application (app) incorporates machine learning tools to filter inappropriate content and also relies on viewers to flag videos that may violate the terms of service. Despite these measures, inappropriate content is still available to users.

As per YouTube’s Terms of Service, the website is not intended for individuals under the age of 13. The app has an option of adjusting settings for each user to restricted mode. In restricted mode, the app “hides videos that may contain inappropriate content flagged by users and other signals. No filter is 100% accurate, but this will help you avoid most inappropriate content.”

The District recognizes the value of the amazing amount of educational information that exists on YouTube. With the guidance and assistance of educational professionals throughout the province, we are empowering students to make responsible choices as digital citizens.

In light of this information, please note YouTube Restricted Mode will be enabled for all K-8 student user accounts as of Monday, March 11, 2019. This will only apply to students in K-8 and restrictions will apply when students are signed into their Google accounts. Signing into Google is a best practice for all student users on any District or school device. A user is automatically signed into their Google account when using a Chromebook or any application in G Suite. As a Result, searching in YouTube will be restricted and students may see the message “Some results have been removed because restricted mode is enabled.” also, The YouTube comments feature will not be available.

As always, we will continue highlighting the importance of digital citizenship and online safety with our students. Thank you for your continued support.
